Type or paste text on the left and this tool shows a live count of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time — all measured in your browser.
Runs entirely in your browserCount words and characters online, locally
Word Counter tallies your text as you type: total words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time at about 200 words per minute. It is handy for essays, social posts, meta descriptions, and anywhere a length limit matters. Your text is measured entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to any server.
Common questions
How are words counted?
A word is any run of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored, so “hello world” counts as two words.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
“Characters” counts every character you type, including spaces and line breaks. “Without spaces” removes all whitespace, which matches the limit many social and SEO fields enforce.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time divides your word count by 200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading, and rounds up to the nearest minute.
How are sentences and paragraphs detected?
Sentences are counted by runs ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser tab as you type. Your text never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
